I listened to a really great interview a couple years ago with Makoto Fujimura, where he discussed creativity in his work as a painter and in kintsugi - the Japanese art of mending broken ceramics by pouring gold between the shattered pieces. It was a wonderful story of how broken heirlooms can be repaired and end up being more valuable and beautiful than before.

Over the past year, I’ve felt more spiritually broken than at any other time in my life. But, remarkably, the brokenness I’ve experienced has also led to an incredible time of healing and restoration. The art of kintsugi helps me remember that I will endure many trials in life - some may even make me feel like all is lost. But, even though I experience pain/suffering/loss, I know God loves me and through His grace I have hope to be shaped and molded into something new, better, more useful, and more beautiful than before.
