about

I'm sitting outside on a beautiful Spring morning enjoying a cup of coffee. A simple pleasure, but one of my "new" favorite things to do, during one of my "new" favorite times of the year.

I worked an office job for many years and our busiest season ran from January through April. During the first part of the year, I'd drive to work early every morning - in the dark, then back home again later that night - still in the dark. Then mid-March would arrive and you'd begin to feel a physical shift in the atmosphere and see glimpses of nature coming alive through plate glass windows. I don’t have that office job anymore - I was always thankful for it, but I missed out on really experiencing the Spring season for a long time.

Recently, while enjoying a cup of coffee with my wife on our back patio, I was overcome by the incredible beauty of this season. I also felt the pang of not embracing the joy in so many of these simple experiences in the past. Would it be possible to fully appreciate the weight of a moment like this without having missed out on so many before? Who knows, but I think it’s incredible how, as the years go by, small things like these can grow in size to become some of the the greatest parts of life.

lyrics

VERSE 1
For the first time in years I am awake
To see the sun rise
as Spring begins to break

I breathe deeply, you make coffee
Our children are sleeping
We talk softly

CHORUS
It’s in times like these -

I feel the small things
That make it all seem
A little less daunting
When we are alone

Yeah it’s the small things
That make your heart sing
Shining like moonbeams
Over the lawn

Then slowly over time
Small things grow in size
To become -
The greatest part of life

VERSE 2
As the years go by
And time accelerates
What I once took for granted
I have grown to appreciate

Moments like these over coffee
To breathe in silence
And hear your heart sing
